Train was headed back toward the yard after servicing Catalyst Paper, Biron Mill. The large paper mill would be visible about a mile beyond the train if it weren't for the trees. Historically Consolidated Papers, Inc., Biron Div., it was founded on 14 Dec. 1892 as the Grand Rapids Pulp & Paper Co.

A CN local appears from behind an old, seemingly idle, industrial facility (partially visible at right) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rail at Appleton, WI on 4 Mar. '18. I haven’t found much information about the facility's current or former occupants. Earthkote International, Inc. is one previous occupant and there is a small Miller Electric sign on the southwest wall. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 6226 and CN 9530.

A CN local parallels Milwaukee St. and approaches 7th St. as it heads north via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 19 Mar. '18. Train was headed for LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.). Dura-Fibre, LLC, is partially visible behind the locomotive. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point.

Description:
CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 19 Mar. '18. As you can see, construction of the new pedestrian bridge is nearing completion. The new bridge is part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. A similar bridge over the North Channel (Menasha Channel) is nearing completion in Menasha. I'm looking forward to utilizing the new trail sections, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this railroad bridge. The Menasha bridge will not be as close to the railroad bridge and will provide a view heretofore only attainable with a boat.

A CN local crosses Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 10 Apr. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The C&NW rails used to cross the road at this gate. Train was returning from Shawano. MillTown Paper, an active rail customer, is partially visible beyond the locomotive. The Essity, formerly SCA Tissue until 14 Jun. '17, warehouse (partially visible background left) has a spur, but does not currently benefit from rail service.

In the background, a container train approaches the W. Bell St. overpass. Container train had two locomotives, CN 2259 and CN 2156. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about half-a-mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The silo of American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., an active rail customer, is visible in the background, near the center of the photograph. A remnant of the former C&NW main line can be seen at far left, on the other side of the clump of trees.

An interesting CN local parallels Pacific St. as it heads south via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 12 Aug. '18. Train consisted of two locomotives and a caboose. I was thrilled to espy WC 16 bringing up the rear of the consist. It was awesome to see a former MILW caboose on former MILW rails, and it isn't very often that I get to watch a caboose in a moving train. The 9th St. grade crossing is in the background.

A CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This was my first encounter with a train here since the new Loop-the-Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank. The Neenah-Menasha YMCA, Island Shores Retirement Community, N. Commercial St. Bridge, and Neenah Paper mill (an active rail customer) are visible in the background to the right.

A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. and traverses the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. The original Thilmany facility stood just out-of-frame to the left, until the majority of it was destroyed in 2013. The oldest part of that complex (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) was saved and restored to house the Kaukauna Library and some offices. The bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911.

The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. Looking southeast from Thilmany Rd. (I presume). It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the right).

The mill's Model RK330 G4 Mobile Railcar Mover will soon extract a cut of cars which will be taken away by the local. The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. The turnout in the foreground has been partially dismantled. To the right, a new turnout has been assembled next to the one it will soon replace. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers.

At right, the mill's Rail King Model RK330 G4 Mobile Railcar Mover will soon extract a cut of cars which will be taken away by the local. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. Description:
A CN local works the Little Chute Industrial Park via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. I haven't found a name for the facility on the right; it has a covered spur but the turnout has been gone for quite a while. The tan building at left is Absolute Supply, 1560 Bohm Dr. The tall facility in the background is Land O'Lakes Farmland Feed, 1700 Bohm Dr., an active rail customer.

Description:
A CN local approaches Depot St. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. The facility at right is Crystal Print, Inc., 500 Hart Ct., an active rail customer. I believe the depot stood on the north side of the tracks (left). In 1889 it stood on the south side (right) and what was then the north end of Verstegen St. The street was re-named Wilson St. at some point and what was once the north end of it is now part of the Crystal Print property.

Description:
A CN local, with about 13 cars, approaches Towmen Rd., as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016), Winnebago Co., WI on 18 May '19. Local was headed back to Neenah from Shawano. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here (out-of-frame to the right) which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. Polish Connection) can be seen in the background. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18.

Description:
GTW 6226 traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen in the center of the scene. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The white building partially visible beyond the locomotive is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood to the left, at what is now Arrowhead Park, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (out of frame to left), and an Ascension clinic (formerly Affinity clinic) at 101 Main St. occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah.

The former MILW bridge, now sans rails, runs parallel a few feet to the left of the C&NW bridge. The MILW abandoned this stretch of track in 1981, portions of it were sold to the C&NW. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. Some of the homes along W. Prospect Ave. can be seen atop the bluff in the background. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Edison Ave. (originally Mill St.), and passes beneath the Oneida Skyline Bridge as it heads northeast through 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '19. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks and had one locomotive, GTW 6226. The former MILW bridge, now sans rails, runs parallel a few feet to the left of the C&NW bridge. The MILW abandoned this stretch of track in 1981, portions of it were sold to the C&NW. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The Atlas Paper Co. mill, 425 W. Water St., stands on the far side of the river at left. Completed in 1878 and expanded over the years, it eventually became part of the Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C). The mill ceased operation ca. 1999, the year K-C donated it to the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame. After some of the additions were razed, the Hall of Fame opened its new home and its interactive museum, the Paper Discovery Center, on 26 Feb. ’05. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’
