Album Info:For a time in the late 80's and 1990's, I was part of the Southern Tier Division of the RRE. We put out a newsletter, which in those days was done by pasting(literally) photos to an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper and copying as many as we needed for our mailing list. Since color copiers were expensive, we did ours on a standard Xerox type machine. For this effort, I took black and white photos on a sporadic basis. Here are some of the results.

Description:  Selkirk-St Louis SESL4B, a second daily schedule between those two end points, pulls toward the west end of Dewitt, where it will enter the Chicago Line and head west behind a pair of GEs, which should be up to the task of getting the 80 cars over the road.

Title:  Empty coal
Description:  Despite being a raceway for intermodal and carload freight, there was still some coal on the Chicago Line, such as this westbound empty train from Bow, NH, UBO59X rolling its 156 cars west behind the then new power of a C40-8 and an SD60M. That's Amtrak's former ex NYC station at right. It will be replaced in a few years by a new station near Carousel Mall.

Description:  RAI 501, a rail train, rolls through CP 285 with gons of stick rail. The Chicago Line saw upwards of 50 moves a day, some days approaching 100, so keeping the physical plant up to date was a priority.

Used to be busier

Description:  DABU rolls 87 racks through the interlocking at CP Attica. The home signals on the double mast at left control the Groveland Industrial Track, which used a combination of the ex EL Attica Branch and the DLW main to reach Groveland, and the Dansville & Mt Morris. The EL line was not set up the same, as this line ran 52.5 miles to Rochester, with the line to Groveland diverging at North Alexander. Some of the EL went to Livonia Avon & Lakeville, and a lot of it is now completely gone. This is also the west end of the siding that extends east five miles to Linden.

Title:  Not long for the world
Description:  DABU rolls past an eastbound track semaphore as it makes its way along the old Erie in the Canisteo valley. Track 1, which the train is on, will be taken up the following year when the line is single tracked from Hornell to Waverly, leaving sidings at Cameron, Gang Mills yard, and Elmira. The numerous semaphores here will be eliminated, removing a historic part of the eastern rail scene.

The D&H main is gone
Title:  The D&H main is gone
Description:  Conrail was engaged in a program to single track the Tier from CP River, approximately where old NT tower was on the EL-the junction of the Buffalo Sub and the River Line to Cuba Jct-east to Waverly. At the date of this photo, they had removed track 2 from River to Cass St in Hornell, unaffectionately known by crews as the "D&H Main" due to the Conrail dispatchers tendency to route those trains on the 10 MPH track, rather than on the faster track 1. DABU heads west on now the only track, seen from the NY 70 overpass east of Canaseraga, where the line had a grade separated profile.

Erie signals
Title:  Erie signals
Description:  DABU rolls past the home signal at CP HORN, which prior to Conrail was ZY on the EL. The Erie signals are still in place guarding the interlocking, which was the east entrance to the massive Hornell yard, and now largely a ghost town.

Description:  DABU starts across the 1875 built Portage Bridge over the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park. The view is from the entrance road leading from NY 19 down to the bottom of the falls. This bridge was replaced by a new structure in 2017.

Another semaphore
Title:  Another semaphore
Description:  We all knew the Erie semaphores were on borrowed time, as Conrail had announced they planned to single track the Tier west of Binghamton. These signals had been installed in the 1920s, and were nearing 75 years in service. The segment from River Jct to Hornell had been single tracked the previous year, and now this section from Hornell to Gang Mills was on the chopping block. We made an effort to shoot them all, as here with DABU rolling past one of the blades near MP 316.

Description:  Train 553 has left East Binghamton, and is now approaching BD, where he will cross the Tier and head north. CP Alcos were common on these trains, often six axles, though they seemed to elude me. The D&H unit is not usually a part of this effort. They must have had a bigger train than usual, or combined it with 270, which sometimes happened. Its also possible the D&H unit was being moved to Saratoga or Mohawk.

Description:  At the time, the SD 50 was not one of them, the leader of an OIBU posed in front of the real classics. Beyond the engine, we see the tower of the DLW station, now privately owned and in good shape. To the left of the station is one of the Marconi transmission towers, dating to 1913 when wireless radio was still experimental. The SD 50 was common then. Now, in 2018, there are not many still running in America.

Description:  One of the easier views along NY 17C was this shot from the shoulder looking across a field. It was an open shot, good for a westbound, and had the added bonus of signa 251-1, one of the many semaphores still in service on the line then. DABU ahs four units and 103 cars today.

Description:  This is not the Mills Job, which usuaoly handles the task of interchanging gas cars with the Owego & Harford. Today the honor goes to the 891 train, an empty coal train going to Buffalo and onto the NS. This is not its usual assignment. It was interesting to watch a set of six axle power take the O&H connecting track and yard. Im sure the crew was holding their breath the entire time.

Description:  Which are well hidden under the trees. Not much now, but a good cliff when the leaves fall. A glimpse of the gorge walls is seen above the train as SLN 5 crosses River Rd near West Cameron.

Description:  Trains coming off the Portage Bridge, about ten miles to the east and a 10 MPH speed restriction, had climbed out of the valley and were usually making a pretty good clip by the time they got to Silver Springs, as this 261 is doing behind a SOO SD 40 and GATX leaser with 54 cars of C/TOFC.
