Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  IC 9605
Description:  A CN local prepares to service Menasha Packaging, 1645 Bergstrom Rd., (out-of-frame to left) via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '19. There are two large manufacturing facilities next door to each other here, out-of-frame to left. Both are currently Menasha Packaging facilities, owned by Menasha Corp., whose new corporate headquarters stands just to the south. The southernmost was built by Menasha Corp. in '64 after a devastating fire destroyed most of their historic downtown Menasha facility. The northernmost was built by Bergstrom Paper in the '60s. The overgrown loading dock could be used to load and unload railroad freight cars, but hasn't for many years. I used to play on that loading dock when I was a child. My dad, Louis, once worked for Bergstrom Paper; some of the land near the loading dock was available for gardens for their employees in the '70s.

Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local transitions from the west leg of the wye to the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. I am left to wonder why they were compelled to navigate the wye in order to back into the yard. The locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background at right.

I am left to wonder why they were compelled to navigate the wye in order to back into the yard. Beyond the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The dump truck and bulldozer in the background rest where a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.

Train had four locomotives, CN 2600, CN 2572, CN 5763, and GTW 5950. I’m curious to learn why the reporting marks have been removed from GTW 5950 (sometime between Apr. '11 and Jan. CN 9486
Title:  CN 9486
Description:  A CN local approaches N. State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 17 Apr. '19. The interesting building at right houses Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper); founded in ‘93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall (father and son). It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also served the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse, which stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service Fountain Lumber Co. (J. Fountain Lumber Co.), 129 N. State St., founded by John Fountain in 1897, which stood to the right (the drive way was the spur). Louis J. Marshall, the last surviving brother, sold the Marshall Paper Co. when he retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. restaurant opened here in ‘77. Local was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN through freight pauses along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 20 Apr. '19. Train had five locomotives, CN 5620, PRLX 211, CN 2122, CN 2410, CN 8013. The 1891 WC (later SOO) depot stood on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass can be seen at left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Title:  CN 2236, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41, passes American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Snells, WI on 24 Apr. '19. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). Train had three locomotives, CN 2236 and a former CSX unit pulling, as well as CN 2672 mid-train. The former SOO main line runs parallel along this side of the train. American Colloid is an active rail customer serviced via former C&NW rails.
