CB&Q 9903
Title:  CB&Q 9903
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 9903, named INJUN JOE, at Overland Park, Kansas on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9903 was ordered in March 1935, delivered by Budd in October 1935. It was built specifically for the Saint Louis - Burlington Iowa service and named the Mark Twain Zephyr. It was retired around 1958 and sold to Frank Dashner in June 1960 for use as a restaurant who died before that plan was implemented. His estate sold the train to Ernie Hays for $6,500.00 and it was displayed at the Midwest Old Threshers Association, Mount Pleasant, Iowa until the early 1970's, when it was sold to Alex Barkett of Building Leasing Corporation International, who also died before implementing any plans for the train. The train's ownership passed to Civic Plaza National Bank. In 1984, Dave Stimson, a player for the Kansas City Chiefs, purchased the equipment. After declaring bankruptcy late in 1987, the train was sold to John C. Lowe. He and two other individuals formed the Mark Twain Corporation, which was headed by Mr. Ronald. This group started the monumental task of trying to restore the train, but ran into challenges along the way. The train was stored in the Joliet, Illinois area awaiting additional investors to help fund its completion.

CB&Q 9906A
Title:  CB&Q 9906A
Description:  CB&Q 9906A "Silver King" and 9906B "Silver Queen" somewhere between Chicago and Aurora, around October 1936, Hedrich-Blessing Studio photo, Chuck Zeiler collection. First a couple of assumptions: Hedrich-Blessing is listed as the Author, this is a publicity photo for the new Denver Zephyr, Hedrich-Blessing took a lot of the CB&Q PR photos. Second assumption: because of the three main tracks, this LOOKS like the suburban territory between Chicago and Aurora. End of assumptions. With the success of the early all-articulated Zephyrs, the CB&Q decided to test the concept of a long-distance, full-service train between Chicago and Denver, to be named the Denver Zephyr. Formal orders were placed during December 1935 for six units (four cab units and two boosters, #'s 9904, 9905, 9906A, 9907A, 9906B, 9907B), ten months after GM announced plans to build a new locomotive facility at McCook (LaGrange) Illinois. The GM plant would not be ready for construction of the locomotives, so the bodies were built by Budd and prime movers and electrical equipment installed by EMC at the new GM plant. It was estimated that 3,000 horsepower would be required for the planned ten-car train. The A-units had two Winton V-12 201A prime movers coupled to GE GT-544 main generators, producing 900 horsepower each, the B-units introduced the Winton V-16 201A prime mover, coupled to a GE GT-536 main generator, producing 1,200 horsepower. On October 16, 1936, 9906A and B emerged from the new EMC plant followed a few days later by 9907A and B. These were the first multiple-unit locomotives on the Burlington, and due to crew concerns about the pay rate for operating two locomotives, the actual suffix letters were not displayed on either unit, and the B-unit did not display a number on the outside. The B-units were the first diesel locomotives in the US without an operating station or controls (although they did have hostler controls at the rear). The B-units carried two Clarkson CA4160 steam generators (there were no steam generators in the A-units). After the E5's were delivered, the 9904-9907 locomotives were re-assigned to the general passenger pool, with the A-units assigned to suburban service between 1949-50. During 1951 the A-units were converted to B-units at West Burlington (removal of headlights, pilots, installation of permanent front couplers and MU connections) and were placed back in the general passenger pool until the arrival of the final E9's. The first two units, 9905 and 9907A were dismantled during 1955 and the rest dismantled during 1957.

Title:  CB&Q 9906A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 9906A (named Silver King) and 9906B (named Silver Queen) at Denver, Colorado on October 23, 1936, photo by R. H. Kindig, Chuck Zeiler collection. Notes on the photograph indicate that this is the first run of the Denver Zephyr. I couldn't quite make out all the numbers on the switcher, but I believe it was a UP locomotive, and the last three of the numbers were 428.

Title:  CB&Q 9906A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 9906A on the Denver Zephyr at Adams City, Colorado on an unknown day, photo by H. O'Hanlon, print by Gorgon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. I roughed in the date as around late 1947 because of the trailing large numberboard E7, the last of which were delivered in 1949. However, in 1948 brake, signal and steam lines (and of course, an exposed coupler) were added to the A units 9904-9907 so they could be operated as trailing units, so I surmised that the trailing E7 was one of those delivered in 1947.

CB&Q E5 9909
Title:  CB&Q E5 9909
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9909 near Saint Louis, Missouri sometime in 1942, photograph by W. K. Barhan, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. This was the General Pershing Zephyr, Train Number 32, daily between Saint Louis and Lincoln via Kansas City, operated jointly by the Chicago & Alton and the CB&Q , thus the ALTON BURLINGTON herald below the headlight. This train operated from April 30, 1939 to 1949, suspended briefly during World War II to conserve fuel and wear on the equipment. The train was originally powered by AA 9908, however that locomotive proved under-powered for the task.

CB&Q E5 9912A
Title:  CB&Q E5 9912A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9910A, named SILVER SPEED, departing Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on August 21, 1949, photographer unknown, print by Willian A. Raia, Chuck Zeiler collectnon. Hand written on the back of the print is J. Scribbins, who may be the original photographer. The trailing E5B unit MAY be 9910B, named SILVER POWER, but I could not definitively make out the name. The following is from the Burlington Route!Historical Society's Burlington Bulletin No. 50, entitled, 'Overnight Every Night, Act 1: Burlington's 1936 Denver Zephyr", edited by Dave Lotz, who captioned this photo thusly:

Amplified with 174 additional chair car seats (provided by a pair of 52-seat cars and one-of-a-kind 70 seater SILVER LEAF, thb latter built for the General Pershing Zephyr), No. 1 (the Denver Zephyr) gets out of Chicago behind E5s SILVER SPEED and SILVER POWER on August 21, 1949. Passengers aboard the amplified portion of the Colorado-bound Zephyr will drink and dine aboard 36-seat diner SILVER SPOON riding first-out behind the E5B. Meanwhile, Gulf Mobile & Ohio Alco S2 No. 11 gathers head-end cars for spotting at the mail terminal (they'll go south tonight on the Advance Midnight Special to Saint Louis) as a GM&O E7 (visible immediately above SILVER SPOON's rooftop kitchen vents) awaits its next call to duty in GM&O's tiny Harrison St. yard. Photographer Jim Scribbins recorded the action from the Polk St. overpass.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9911A
Description:  Ex-Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9911A at Springfield, Missouri on January 6, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9911A was loaned by the Illinois Railway Museum to the BN for display at the debut ceremony of the new SD70MAC's in Fort Worth, Texas. On the way to Fort Worth, the F5 stopped at the former SLSF shops in Springfield for some wheel truing work. It is seen here as it was released from the shops. After being coupled to the passenger trainset (also from IRM) and with EMDX GP38-2 753 leading (for collision!protection), the E5 and train will head for Fort Worth. It was rumored that somewhere between Springfield and Fort Worth, The E5 powered the train, meeting or perhaps exceeding the speed limit.

Description:  Ex - Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9911A at Springfield, Missouri on January 6, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9911A was on loan from the Illinois Railway Museum and stopped at the former SLSF shops in Springfield for some wheel truing work. Here it is seen being pulled from the shops after a couple of days work. It will be reunited with the ex-Nebraska Zephyr trainset, and with leased EMDX GP38 753 leading (for collision protection) depart for Fort Worth, Texas and an appearance at the debut of the BNSF's SD70MAC locomotives.

Another interesting thing in this photo is the turntable in the background. I don't know the history, but apparently either the Frisco or the BNSF decided that a surface (rather than a pit) was the better plan.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9912A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9912A at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown date, photograph by R. S. Plummer, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Although the date is unknown it is likely somewhere between the late 1940's, when the truck skirts were removed, and the early 1950's when the names were dropped. In this case, the name 'Silver Meteor' is still visible on the name plate below the first carbody window. Number 9912A was built in March 1940 (c/n 969) and traded to GE in March 1965. This is a Phase 1 E5, the evidence is the buffer plate (the Phase 2 E5 carried the anti-climber across), and a cab vent below the Engineer's side window (missing on the Phase 2).

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9912A, named SILVER METEOR, at Kansas City, Missouri, date unknown, photograph by R. S. Plummer, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Although the date is unknown, I roughed it in as early 1950. The truck skirts were removed in the late 1940's, and the coupler covers (present in this photo) were removed by the early 1960's. Also, the imitation grill plates (striped lines on either side of the upper headlight) are still present. They were removed in the early 1950's and replaced with stainless steel doors because to access the MU plugs and electro-pneumatic brake connections, the plates had to be unscrewed and removed. Terminal crews took to leaving the plates off completely.

Griffith, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. The Exposition Flyer was inaugurated on June 11, 1939 in conjunction with the D&RGW and WP providing service between Chicago and Oakland ( San Francisco ) California, a precursor of the California Zephyr service. The train name was derived the Golden Gate International Exposition, held in San Francisco in 1939 and 1940, and replaced the CB&Q's Aristocrat, the D&RGW's Panoramic, and the WP's Scenic Limited trains. The Exposition Flyer continued to operate on the CB&Q through World War II, often operating in multiple sections due to war time traffic.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9915A at West Burlington, Iowa on September 29, 1963, Kodak Tri-X negative by Chuck Zeiler. This was the occasion of the 23rd birthday of steam locomotive 5632, and the CB&Q sponsored a fantrip to the West Burlington, Iowa shops, where 5632 had been constructed. There were a variety of locomotives on the floor in various stages of repair, and according to the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #10, 9915A (once named Silver Carrier) was wrecked at Bigelow MO on 4/22/63, and traded in on a U25B around 3/65. I don't know if it was returned to service in between.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9915B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9915B eastbound at Aurora, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. My best guess, this was a late running Train Number 48, The Blackhawk, due in at Aurora at 5:40AM, arriving from Saint Paul. It's definitely eastbound, and it's definitely in the morning. Because of the heavyweight car cut in behind the motors, I disallowed the Denver Zephyr, due in Aurora at about this time. The Denver Zephyr almost never had a heavyweight car in its consist while I photographed it between 1962 and 1966.

CB&Q E7 9916B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9916B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9916B leading Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr, westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. For a few years (1962-66) I lived next to the CB&Q, and I recall Train #11 storming across the grade crossing at Loomis Street, and I had occasion to photograph the event. Number 11 appears less than attractive, with all the heavyweight cars up front, but the rear of this train is a stainless steel five car articulated trainset from the second Twin Cities Zephyr set. It was originally a seven car articulated set, but was reduced to five cars in Nebraska Zephyr service. Number 9916B was built November 13, 1945 (c/n 2939) on EMD order E646, retired and sold for scrap in May 1968. It was among the first order for E7's by the CB&Q, and had a retractable front coupler and buffer, and in the retracted position, the opening was closed over by a pair of doors. The coupler was extended/retracted by a hydro-pneumatic system that included side lock keys and a whistle that sounded continuously if the keys were not in the locked position. After a few years, the front coupler was permanently left in the extended position.

CB&Q E7 9917B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9917B
Description:  CB&Q E-7 9917B eastbound at Loomis Street in Naperville, Illinois on October 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was wrecked at south Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 15, 1966, I have no further information. This locomotive displays mis-matched MU plug covers. Looking at the triangular shapes that are painted on either side of the upper headlight, you will notice that the one on the engineer's side has a black striped middle section. This is probably a replacement cover removed from a locomotive painted in the as-delivered black Whisker paint scheme. When delivered, the E series locomotives were painted with black where the red is, on the front. The Burlington Route logo below the lower headlight was as you see it here, and the side stripes were red. It also displays lower than usual E-7 stainless steel model plates, seen here below the sand filler on the cab, but usually located above the sand filler. Trailing the 9917B is another E-7 from the second phase design from Electro-Motive, a SD-24 and a GP-20. All the locomotives are facing forward, or running elephant style, a Burlington preference, which I have yet to determine a reason for. It was unusual for the CB&Q to mix its freight and passenger motive power.

Here's a little CB&Q trivia: the reason for those triangular shapes painted on either side of the upper headlight was to mimic the air intakes of the original Pioneer Zephyr design. All CB&Q E units wore that design. Around the time of the Burlington Northern merger, it was dropped. Although it looks like a freight train, I believe it belongs in the passenger train category. It appears in the CB&Q Chicago & Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #11, effective Sunday October 31, 1965, as a first class train. Also published by the Burlington Route Historical Society in Zephyr #53 was a re-print of Timetable #10, which had the same listing. Due out of Aurora at 1:29 AM, it has two scheduled stops between Aurora and Chicago: Congress Park at 2:15 AM, and Cicero at 2:25 AM, before its arrival in Chicago at 3:25 AM. Note that the schedule was a little padded to cover setouts at Congress Park (Meat) and Cicero (Trailer On Flat Car - TOFC).

I contacted Ed DeRouin of Pixels Publishing (he has written or published several articles and books with CB&Q content) to figure out what I had photographed, and here's his answer: You photographed a late running Number 14, which was a Lincoln - Chicago train scheduled to move express, later meat and packing house products in reefers and TOFC, with a 3:25 a.m arrival in Chicago. Engineers I spoke with decades ago shared that often the last cars were set out at Cicero and the motors ran light to 14th Street. This train carried no passengers. Although some storage mail was moved via 14, no RPO was operated. Since most mail and express was westbound, this train was also used to bring empty storage cars east.

It looks like they're smoking it up, and I'll bet they are. About 12 miles behind, Number 14 dropped down to about 20 mph to weave through the Aurora Depot and pass through downtown Aurora on elevated track, then at restricted speed to Eola Yard, then throttle up a bit, there's a grade crossing at East Eola, another a couple miles down at River Road, one more, at Loomis Street (just behind me in this photo), then ten miles or so of no grade crossings. There was a lot of fast running between Naperville and Downers Grove, so my guess, he's in Run 8. One can only imagine the consternation of the Dispatcher finding this train in his morning rush hour lineup. Number 14 is on the middle track of a three track main and will have to cross over in front of suburban rush hour trains to do the setout at Congress Park. Bad plan probably, and if it were me, I guess I'd get it off the railroad as fast as I could; run it into Cicero yard, then send a switcher back with the Congress Park setout, about a five mile reverse move.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9918A westbound on Train Number 23, the Afternoon Zephyr, also known as the Second Twin Cities Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on July 3, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. As you can see, I was learning to pan with the train, resulting in a clear locomotive front, but a blurred train. I'll fix that in later photos, but unfortunate on this photo date. Three locomotives on the Twin meant extra cars were in the consist.

CB&Q E7 9920A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9920A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9920A at the Eola Reclamation Plant on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the cab and first prime mover roof section of CB&Q E7 9920A (built in November 1945, c/n 2946), the lead locomotive of CB&Q Train Number 3, which struck a standing detouring Rock Island train at Mongomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. The following is part of the ICC accident report:

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (CRI&P) is connected to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) at Ottawa, Ill., which is on the Streator Branch 41 miles west of Montgomery. A few days before the accident, CRI&P trains started detouring over the CB&Q tracks between Ottawa and Chicago because of a defective CRI&P bridge over the Des Plaines River at Joliet, Ill. Some time before 8:45 p.m. on the day of the accident, CRI&P passenger trains No.4 and No. 10 were combined at Ottawa to detour eastward over the CB&Q to Chicago, via Montgomery interlocking. This combined train, consisting of six CRI&P diesel-electric units and 19 cars, operated on the CB&Q as Extra RI 656 East. It left Ottawa at 8:45 p.m. with a CRI&P engine crew, a CB&Q engineer-pilot, and a CB&Q road foreman of engines in the control compartment at the front of the locomotive. A CB&Q conductor-pilot and a CRI&P train crew were at various locations in the cars.

Approximately 2 hours after leaving Ottawa, Extra RI 656 East arrived at Montgomery interlocking, where it stopped on the Streator Branch main track with the front end 675 feet west of switch 14 and 195 feet west of signal 24-23, which indicated Stop. About the same time, the men on the locomotive saw a detouring westbound CRI&P passenger train, Extra RI 634 West, stopped on track No. 1 east of the interlocking station. A few minutes later, they saw the headlight of No.3, a west-bound CB&Q passenger train, approaching on track No.2 and surmised that their train would be routed eastward on track No.2 after No. 3 passed. While Extra RI 656 East was waiting for No.3 to pass, a warning device sounded in the control compartment of the first diesel-electric unit and the CRI&P fireman went into the engine room of this unit to determine why the warning device had sounded. Immediately after the fireman left the control compartment, the CB&Q road foreman of engines noticed No.3 had been diverted to the Streator Branch main track at switch 14 and was closely approaching at high speed. He promptly called a warning to the CRI&P and CB&Q engineers and ran to a side door of the control compartment, where he started to jump from the locomotive. Before he could jump, however, No.3 struck the front end of Extra RI 656 East, killing the CRI&P engineer and the CB&Q engineer-pilot. The CB&Q road foreman of engines and the CRI&P fireman were injured.

Number 3, a westbound first-class passenger train, consisting of 3 diesel-electric units and 15 cars, left Aurora at 10:45 p.m., 3 minutes late, and proceeded westward on track No.2. A few minutes later, it approached Montgomery interlocking at 63 miles per hour, as indicated by the speed recording tape. The engineer and fireman were in the control compartment at the front of the locomotive, and the other crew members were at various locations in the cars. Signal 5-3 indicated Proceed as the train approached Montgomery interlocking, and this indicated to the enginemen that the route was lined for movement of No.3 through the interlocking on track No.2. The route, however was improperly lined for movement of No.3 from track No.2 to the Streator Branch main track, via switch 14. The engineer apparently first became aware of this when the train reached the area of the interlocking station at which time he initiated an emergency brake application. A few moments later, the train passed the interlocking station, entered the Streator Branch main track at switch 14 and, while moving at 52 miles per hour, struck the front end of Extra RI 656 East.

Not a pretty Zephyr, it held the mail contract between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska, so most of the train was made of mail storage cars. The passenger accommodations at the rear was generally a five car articulated trainset from the Second Twin Cities Zephyr.
