Not quite |
Description: |
I was sitting in my van a block or so from the causeway that follows the main road here when I heard the dispatcher ask 101 where he was. "Just coming onto the causeway at St Augustine," came the reply. I took off at a run, hoping an old fat guy could get high enough up for a good shot. I almost made it, but was able to get this shot of a pair of retro painted GEs and a fuel tender pulling 94 platforms of train 101 south. |

Lite power going away |
Description: |
We had taken our Winnebago to the plant in Forest City IA for some warranty work, and found an Iowa Northern job working on a Sunday. I wasnt able to get him working, I was blocked by trees, but he did come past the Winnebago parking lot when he was done. Nice looking units. |

Headed...somewhere |
Description: |
This Iowa Northern power was working some cars at Forest City, then headed north when they were done, rolling past the Winnebago plant where I was parked. It was a lucky catch, and I have no idea where they were headed. This is a nice looking paint scheme, much nicer than the last time I encountered this road, in 1987. At that time, they were using ex BN Geeps, still in green, relettered. |

Love/hate |
Description: |
I love and hate short lines all at the same time. There are some interesting operations, and in days past, a lot of interesting power, especially back in the late 70's when the likes of Conrail were selling off underused and unprofitable branch lines, and they were also casting off a lot of odd and obscure power. At the same time, a lot of them run on an erratic basis, often tied to one or two customers, or when the connecting Class 1 brings some cars to the connection. This makes them hard to catch, especially if you're an outlander, though, as photographer Ken Karlewicz noted about the NYSW years ago, "living near the tracks doesn't guarantee you'll see trains." So it was with great joy I found this Pioneer Lines train rolling slowly on an old Wabash branch toward Napoleon as we were driving east on US 24, headed toward Toledo and the Ohio Turnpike. Once in a while, you get lucky!! |

Long time, no change |
Description: |
Sometimes, when a Class 1 sells or abandons a line, the infrastructure or signage stays in place for a long time. Such is the case with this long time sold off Wabash line from Toledo to Fort Wayne, now active for a short distance in Ohio. Pioneer Rail 3001 rolls 12 cars east toward the end of track and a connection to CSX-ex B&O in Napoleon, passing a sign that is at least 40 years old, and possibly a lot older, given that the N&W merged the Wabash in 1964. |

Rickety |
Description: |
One of the features of long sold off branch lines is often the lack of track maintenance. This is not nearly as bad as some, but still, the stick rail is showing its age as the train rolls away through a tunnel of trees. |

Familiar face, a long way from home |
Description: |
This ex CSX unit started life as CR 5061 in April 1988, then went to CSX in the Conrail split in 1999. Here in Kansas, a long way from its start in more densely settled places, it has cut off from its train, and is headed in to tie up at an elevator here. |

We were on our way to Denver, rolling north on K-27, having just crossed into Kansas from Oklahoma, when we saw a train slowly heading toward us on the Cimarron Valley. Not as good as the GP 30s they had previously, but always good to see a train on a line that doesnt run many of them. |

Tall tower |
Description: |
Grain elevators are called prairie skyscrapers for good reason; they are usually the tallest structure around, and can be seen for miles. This one is at Eads Colorado, on the ex Mopac Colorado Eagle line-the Horace Sub-is now on the Colorado Pacific, one of whose units is tied up for the weekend. |

Why the big power |
Description: |
The elevator here is a sizeable operation, and shifts some good sized cuts of cars in and out, requiring the effort of a pair of one time road units. |

Trackmobile at Bakery Feeds |
Description: |
Adjacent to the KCS yard in Watts is the Bakery Feeds plant, which makes animal feeds out of residuals from baked goods and snack foods. They get covered hoppers and tanks of vegetable oil. The plant is switched by this little guy, as shown with a short cut of cars. |

Working the yard |
Description: |
We made a trip to OKC and a few other places, staying in the Omni in OKC, which had a commanding view of the surrounding area from our 16th floor room. One of the view was of the Rocks Biddle St yard, which is now worked by the Stillwater Central, a pair of whose units are working the west end in this morning shot from our room. |
