Sargent Bell ~ who has probably taken more steam and electric train photos than any other man in the United States ~ used this special while he was in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad back in the 'Nineties.'" Shown here is PRR engine #435, a D-11A (4-4-0) "American" built in the Altoona Machine Shops during June of 1885 and retired in May of 1913 after 28 years of faithful service.

Description:  Here are two photos taken by unidentified photographers that were published originally in the February 1941 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 20. Partial Caption: "The Pennsylvania's first experiments with smoke-lifters did not enhance the appearance of its K5 engine Number 5698, but they did pave the way for the stack treatments of the 3768." Pictured in the lower photo is #5698, a K-5 (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during 1929 and retired in October of 1952. Shown in the upper photo is #3768, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1920, streamlined in 1936, and retired in October of 1953.

Photo Caption: "A dramatic night repair job on the cab-signal receiving bar of a Pennsy sharknose diesel at the South Amboy, N.J., enginehouse." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5778, a BP-20 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in October of 1948, sustained damage during a wreck on 7 February 1956, and retired in March of 1964 after just 16 years of revenue service. Photo Caption: "Pennsy Consolidation No. 297, Class H-9, switching at Shamokin, Pa., in 1957." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #297 is an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an H-8B during January of 1911, rebuilt in Juniata as an H-8SB in July of 1919, later rebuilt as an H-9S, and retired in February of 1960 after 49 years of faithful service. The number of the N-6 cabin car is not recorded.

Both are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods." #4545 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during August of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in February of 1943, and retired in February of 1952. #1284 was built in Juniata as an I-1S in February of 1919, rebuilt as an I-1SA in March of 1941, and retired in February of 1952. Note the Rear-End Brakeman catchin' the breeze on the N-5 cabin car! (#1,800)

Photo Caption: "Pennsylvania's class FF-2 electric freight locos, bought from Great Northern, were in service less than a decade. No. 7 at Thorndale, Pa., February 6, 1960." PRR engine #7 is an FF-2 (1-C-C-1) built by the American Locomotive Company for the Great Northern Railroad as number "5017" in March of 1930, acquired by the PRR and renumbered "7" in August of 1956, and retired in April of 1965 after 35 years of dual-road service. Note that both pantographs are raised.

Photo Caption: "Penn Central No. 4601, class E-44, ex-New Haven, on the PC main line at Linden, N.J., two years ago." #4601 is an E33 (C-C) electric built by General Electric as Virginian Railroad number "131" in October of 1956, rated at 3,300 horsepower, acquired by the Norfolk & Western Railroad and renumbered "231," acquired by the New Haven Railroad and renumbered "300," absorbed by the Penn Central and renumbered "4601," absorbed by Conrail with the same number, and presently owned by the Illinois Railroad Museum in Union.

Cover Caption: "Our classic cover painting of a Pennsy train on Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pa., was done by Donald E. Antes, Jr., president of Hall of Steam, 1407 N. Atherton St., State College, Pa." Depicted here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, then withdrawn from service and disassembled due to safety concerns, and still not reassembled to wholeness. [N.B.: Mr. Antes's work reminds me of a similar "Horseshoe Curve" scene painted by Mr. Grif Teller in 1935.]
