Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2021, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  CN 5778 and CN 2191
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. as it heads northeast at the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Mar. '21. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a spur, runs parallel on the other side of the train. The facility partially visible in the background at the right is Amcor Flexibles Neenah (formerly Bemis until Jun. '19, formerly Curwood, Inc.), 1815 Marathon Ave.

GTW 4930
Title:  GTW 4930
Description:  GTW 4930 crosses S. Mason St. while headed southwest via CN, former C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 25 Mar. '21. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

GTW 5825 and GTW 4616
Title:  GTW 5825 and GTW 4616
Description:  GTW 5825 and GTW 4616 rest at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Mar. '21. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994; it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

UP 6779 and BNSF 7992
Title:  UP 6779 and BNSF 7992
Description:  A through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 27 Mar. '21. The train is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. To the right, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right of that you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '21. The telephone pole to the left of center and the one to the left of the lead locomotive stand next to an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

GTW 4930
Title:  GTW 4930
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Outagamie St. and approaches W. Prospect Ave. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 31 Mar. '21. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks with 13 cars. This intersection of W. Prospect Ave., S. Outagamie St., and W. Haskel St. was recently reconstructed (and reconfigured), as part of the much needed reconstruction of W. Prospect Ave. from the tracks to S. Seminole Rd. This portion of W. Prospect Ave., from S. Mason St. westward, used to be named Carver St. The portion of W. Prospect Ave. from S. Mason St. to S. State St. was W. 2nd St. Prospect originally only ran from S. State St. to what is currently the intersection with S. Appleton St./S. Oneida St.

CN 2255
Title:  CN 2255
Description:  A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 3 Apr. '21. Train had two sequentially numbered locomotives, CN 2255 pulling and CN 2256 mid-train. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel along the other side of the train. A pair of facilities owned by Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), both originally Kampo warehouses, stand in the background. Both have spurs for rail service, but the turnout connecting them to the passing siding was removed quite a while ago. The one on the left (north) is at 2240 Harrison St., covers 176,000 sq. ft., with 16'-10" high walls, 22 truck doors, 2 ground-level doors. The one on the right (south) is at 555 W. Bell St., Neenah, WI, and covers 97,000 sq. ft., with 24' high walls, 10 truck doors, 1 ground-level door.

GTW 5852 and WC 15
Title:  GTW 5852 and WC 15
Description:  A CN local passes the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it traverses the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 4 Apr. '21. Local had one locomotive, GTW 5852, and a caboose, WC 15. Sorry, but I will not willingly utter the phrase "shoving platform" to describe a piece of rolling stock which is obviously a caboose. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a spur, also in use by CN, can be seen in the background. The overpass, erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07. The sign at the right is a reminder of that former grade crossing, it says "Main & Pass - Do Not Park Cars Between Here & Crossing." WC 15 is a former AC caboose. According to http://trainweb.org/algoma/cabooses.html, it was built in 1976 as AC 9606. However, the last number under the WC logo looks more like a 2 than a 6 (AC 9602 was renumbered WC 12 according to that web site).

CN 9524 and CN 9402
Title:  CN 9524 and CN 9402
Description:  A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 11 Apr. '21. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

CN 3801, CN 2920, et al.
Title:  CN 3801, CN 2920, et al.
Description:  A pair of CN container trains meet at the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts on former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 14 Apr. '21. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. I was walking onto the bridge, hoping to get to a better spot to capture video and still photographs, when these trains appeared earlier than I anticipated.

Description:  A CN container train starts to cross N. Lake St. after a brief halt on former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 14 Apr. '21. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI, in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  A CN local crosses Washington St. after servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.), 388 Ahnaip St., via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 14 Apr. '21. The awesome, old building to the left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style) were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. Wayne's Towing and Service occupied this building for quite a while between the original and current occupants. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was once also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s.
