Viewing Album:  Riding the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles

Album Info:Part of a coast-to-coast and back itinerary on Amtrak. Riding Amtrak limits the photos one can get of the actual train itself. There are regular and announced 10 to 20 minute station stops where passengers are allowed a stretch-your-legs / smoking break on the platform. I used those stations to walk up and grab a photo of the front end; hopefully including the depot as a photo prop. While aboard I was taking photos from the Dome Lounge Car, and from the rear car of the train. Some of those photos are included in this album to give a sense of the spectacular passing scenery.

Description:  Once we rejoined the BNSF Transcon the SW Chief passed 6 westbound freights as well as 6 opposing eastbound freights. The BNSF dispatcher truly was giving Amtrak priority over a very busy two track main line. It was like we were an ambulance, and all the other freight trains were pulling off to the side to let us pass.
