Album Info: | The Baldwin SLSF 1615 was built as a narrow gauge steam engine for the Tsarist Russian government to be used in WWI. The Tsarist government was overthrown in 1917 before delivery and the new government refused delivery. The engine was rebuilt as a 2-10-0 standard gauge and began its life on the Frisco Line (SLSF). Later, it was sold to Eagle-Pitcher Industries and spent many years hauling zinc and lead ore in the mines of Eastern Oklahoma. The coming of the diesel age forced its retirement in 1954. Eagle-Pitcher donated SLSF 1615 to the City of Altus and the Frisco agreed to move it free of charge. After many repairs to guarantee its road readiness, it traveled over 300 miles across Oklahoma for permanent display in Altus. |
