BO 2-8-8-0 #7314 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Not long after it was rebuilt by the B&O Shops, this new 2-8-8-0 #7314 sits in the Cumberland yard in Maryland with its other rebuilt sisters. Originally built by Alco-Richmond in January of 1918 as Seaboard Air Line 2-8-8-2 #514, it proved to be a poor match for the needs of the SAL and too costly to maintain both loco and damaged trackage. The SAL sold all of its 2-8-8-2's to B&O in 1920. It was renumbered BO #7314. In 1923, the B&O Shops undertook to simplify the compound Mallet into a simple-articulated one, removed the trailing truck and reclassified BO 2-8-8-0 #7314 as EL-6a. With the advent of diesel, this massive machine was sold for scrap in July of 1950 after nearly 32 years of service. Simplified EL-6a specs - 63" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, four 25x32" cylinders, engine wt of 492,000 lb and impressive tractive effort of 108,000 lb. This is a Ralph G. Dunn photo.

Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-0 #2692
Description:
Ralph G. Dunn captured the sad scene of this once proud loco. Drivers removed, boiler plate gone, bell, whistle and external tubes all pulled from its body, leaving a sad shell. Unfortunately, no date or location were given so arbitrary ones were set. Number 2692 was rebuilt in 1941 to 0-8-0 713 at Cumberland, renumbered to 1635 in 1954, renumbered again in 1956 to 849, scrapped in 1959.

B&O 2-8-8-0 #7304 - Baltimore & Ohio RR
Description:
Originall built by Alco-Richmond in 1916 as a 2-8-8-2, class A locomotive for the Seaboard Air Line as their #504, it proved too big for SAL so the 15 locos in the class were sold to B&O. In 1922, the B&O shops rebuilt them to 2-8-8-0 and labeled them the EL-6a class. THey had 63" drivers, developed an impressive boiler pressure of 225 psi for its sets of 25"x32" cylinders. The last of the class were retired by 1954. The date is approximate and no photographer credit listed.

BO 2-8-8-0 #7039 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Interesting history is attached to this massive and powerful loco. Built by Alco-Schenectady in January of 1912 as B&O 0-8-8-0 #2040 (class O-1), it was first renumbered and reclassified in 1916 as B&O #7039 (class LL-1). Sometime between 1919-23, it was rebuilt by the B&O Shops to the 2-8-8-0 wheel configuration seen in the photo below and reclassed as an EL-4 loco. The loco was finally retired and scrapped in November of 1950 after nearly 34 years of dedicated service. New rebuilt specs - 56" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, compound 26x41" high pressure cylinders with 32x56" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 471,300 lb, totally impressive tractive effort of 105,000 lb. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection..

BO 2-8-8-4 #7615 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
This B&O class EM-1 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomoitves behemouths builot by Baldwin in 1943 & 1944 (B&O says 1944 & 1945) were the last articulated steam locomotives built for the B&O. Actually, the B&O did not want the EM-1s. Instead they wanted diesels. However, because of restrictions imposed by the War Production Board, the EM-1s were delivered from Baldwin in 1943 (7600 - 7619) and 1944 (7620 - 7629). Specs - 64" drivers, 235 psi, 24"x32" cylinders, engine weight of 628,700 lb and tractive effort of 115,000 lb. All were scrapped by 1960. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so "guess"-timations were used.

Baltimore & Ohio RR 2-8-8-4 #7607
Description:
Like its two other sisters in this album, this massive 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1944. According to one source, B&O wanted more diesels but was stuck taking this due to the war limitations on engine construction. The class EM-1 unit sported 64" drivers, engine wt of a hefty 628,700 lb, developed 235 psi and had an overall engine+tender wheelbase of a whopping 112.5'. Max Miller was the photographer

Description:
Normally I don't post photos of photos but this is another one of the exceptions. A note on the back of this older b&w photo states "Outside Cumberland east. Copied from 7 1/2 x 4 " old photo taken with box camera." Instead of the term "Northern", WM called this 4-8-4 configuration "Potomacs" which was a preferred name for a "southern" railroad. Specifics - J-1 class, 69" drivers, impressive 255 psi boiler pressure, 26.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 5-6,500 lb, tractive effort of 70,591 lb. Date is approximate. With Mark Reever's help (see comment below), the photo must have been taken between 1947-53. Also, Nick Chillianis (see comment below) added the final disposition of this loco -"Pulled from service in 1954 but sat until their equipment trusts expired in 1957, when they were sold for scrap." Date is approximate & based on the fact that RDG 6506 was built in 1963 and renumbered in 1964. Thanks to Rodney Miller (see comment below), the location is Cumberland, MD, near Mexico Tower. NKP 2-8-4 #759 - Nickel Plate Road
Description:
This interesting photo was taken by an unknown photographer while Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire #759 was heading up one of the fan excursions it led while operational at Steamtown National Historic Site. Definitely a more "modern" way of loading coal than a traditional coaling tower used to be and far more fans watching than used to at a coaling tower too.. Note the Western Maryland Alco S2 #126 which headed up the coaling train. It would be retired two years later. Note on the back of the photo states "NKP 759 on train AJ-1 and AJ-2 being loaded at Cumberland." No photographer was listed for this action photo.
