17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 April 1965. Shown here are the Locomotive Ready Tracks below the 17th Street Bridge; many makes and models are represented. Of the 35 or so locomotives visible, the following are identifiable by number. Starting from the bottom are PRR engines #8807, #8967, #8574, and #6307. #8807 is an FS-16M built by Fairbanks-Morse in 1952 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #8967 is a BS-16M built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #8574 is an ES-15M built by EMD in 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #6307 is an AF-27 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1965 and rated ate 2,700 horsepower. Visible in the distance is a portion of the 8th Street Bridge.

Sunday. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 02 May 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #6307 and #6304. Both are AF-27's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower each. They have just passed under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to East Altoona after making a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Also visible on the right is a partial view of SLOPE Tower.

Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6307 and #6300. Both are AF-27's built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower each. They're pushing a westbound ore train past the Altoona Passenger Station, partially visible at the far right. Meanwhile, the eastbound coal train pulled by engine #9530 is still stopped at the far left. (#22 of 44)

PRR "Gallitzin Tunnels," #3 of 3, 1965
Description:
New Portage. Here is the third of three photos by John M. Prophet III that were taken near the tunnels under Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 11 June 1965. It was published originally in his (2009) book entitled "Prophet's Pennsy," page 47. Partial Caption: "AF27 #6300 'helper' on the rear of ore train, at 'SF,' just east of the tunnels at Gallitzin, Pa., June 11, 1965." Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6300 and #6307 are AF-27's built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower each. Immediately in front of them is PRR N-8 cabin car #478175. Also note the position-light signal at the right for controlling eastbound trains headed toward New Portage Junction in Duncansville.

The fireman is picking-up train orders from the railroader at ALTO Tower, just like the conducter in the N-8 caboose ahead of him.

Brickyard. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains at the Brickyard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 July 1965. On the right (R to L) are PRR engines #6307 and #6302. Both are AF-27's built by the American Locomotive Company during 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower each. They are pushing a 68-car westbound mixed-cargo freight train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. On the left (R to L) are PRR engines #2357, #2535, #7112, and #7033. #2357 is an EF-25 built by EMD in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are pulling ~ or, rather, braking ~ an 83-car eastbound mixed-cargo freight train with caboose #477031. That's the Brickyard Crossing in the foreground!
