WP 2-8-8-2 #258 - Western Pacific
Title:  WP 2-8-8-2 #258 - Western Pacific
Description:  Here is a fine example of a 1931 Baldiwn built 2-8-8-2 Chesapeake-type locomotive, although this website doesn't have that choice under Baldwin configurations. Specifics - M-137 class, 63" drivers, 235 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders (4), engine weight of 665,100 lb, impressive tractive effort of 137,174 lb, The entire class of M-137 were scrapped in the early 1950's after Western Pacific tested the EMD four-diesel-set and then immediately purchased them, one of the very first class one railroads to switch to diesel power. No photographer listed. Date and location are arbitrarily set as none were given but based on Nick Chillianis comment below, the date has been reset to correspond to the production date.

BO 2-8-8-4 #661 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #661 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Massive brute built by Baldwin in 1944 for the Baltimore & Ohio RR. According to www.steamlocomotive.com, "the EM-1's were the last articulated steam locomotives built for the B&O. Actually, the B&O did not want the EM-1's. Instead they wanted diesels. However, because of restrictions imposed by the War Production Board, the EM-1s were delivered from Baldwin in 1944 (7600 - 7619) and 1945 (7620 - 7629). For this wheel arrangement, they were relatively modest in size, but very successful. Specs - EM-1 class, nee-7611, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, 24x32" cylinders, engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive traction effort of 115,056 lb. The last of this class was retired in 1960. R.D. Patton photo

BO 2-8-8-4 #666 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #666 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Massive and powerful, this articulated 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive was the last steam to be built for the Baltimore & Onio in 1943. Truthfully, the B&O really wanted diesels but governmental restraints forced the purchase of the EM-1 articulated steam locos. Originally built as BO #7616, it was renumbered in 1956. It lasted until being scrapped in 1960. Specs - class EM-1, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. Glenn H. Davis photo

Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #679 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Although Baltimore & Ohio wanted diesels instead of more steam locomotives, due to the War Production Board restrictions, the massive Yellowstones were built instead. Baldwin built this loco originally as BO #7629 (serial #71511) but it was renumbered late in its life to BO #679 in February of 1957. The loco was dropped from the roster in 1960 and presumed scrapped. Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7600 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Beautiful action shot taken by an unknown photographer of the massive B&O 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type locomotive #7600. This was the first of 30 massive Yellowstones built by Baldwin although the B&O had wanted diesels instead. The War Production Board restricted diesel building so these were built instead. The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 650 and retired in 1960. Specs - EM-1 class, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7601 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Massive and powerful are the two adjectives for this 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomtoive built by Baldwin in 1944 as BO #7601 (serial #70063). The impressive loco sereved quite successfully until dieselization hit the roster. Even then, they were occasionally pulled back into action, even to head up a few passenger trains! What a sight that would have been! The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 651 and dropped from the roster in 1960. No photographer was listed for this photo.

Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7602 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  This massive brute, B&O 2-8-8-4 #7602, was one of the last articulated steam locomotives built in the US. Although B&O wanted diesels in 1944 but were forced by the war effort to order only steam, this massive locomotive served a desparate need for power to move coal in the West Virginia area. Built by Baldwin in 1944, the last of this class was retired in 1960. Specs - EM-1 class). 64" drivers, an impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, 24"x32" cylinders, engine weight of 628,700 lb and impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. No photographer, date or location was listed on the photo. Thanks to John Kernan (see comment below), the locaiton is New Castle, PA. Thanks John for your help!

Title:  Baltimore & Ohio RR 2-8-8-4 #7602
Description:  Like its other sister in the album, #7629, this massive 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1944. According to one source, B&O wanted more diesels but was stuck taking this due to the war limitations on engine construction. The class EM-1 unit sported 64" drivers, engine wt of a hefty 628,700 lb, developed 235 psi and had an overall engine+tender wheelbase of a whopping 112.5'. Max Miller was the photographer.

Description:  Steaming up, coal loaded and ready to roll is Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive #7609 built by Baldwin in 1944 (serial #70071). The impressive loco was not the first choice by B&O (they wanted diesels) but war restrictions forced these onto the B&O roster. They proved powerful and fairly reliable until diesels replaced them. The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO #659 and the loco was eventually scrapped in 1960. No date, location or photographer was listed for this great photo.

Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7612 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Long before an SD40-2 unit wore the number B&O #7612, this massive 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive had the honor to wear the number. BO 2-8-8-4 #7615 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7615 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  This B&O class EM-1 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomoitves behemouths builot by Baldwin in 1943 & 1944 (B&O says 1944 & 1945) were the last articulated steam locomotives built for the B&O. Actually, the B&O did not want the EM-1s. Instead they wanted diesels. However, because of restrictions imposed by the War Production Board, the EM-1s were delivered from Baldwin in 1943 (7600 - 7619) and 1944 (7620 - 7629). Specs - 64" drivers, 235 psi, 24"x32" cylinders, engine weight of 628,700 lb and tractive effort of 115,000 lb. All were scrapped by 1960. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so "guess"-timations were used.

BO 7616
Title:  BO 7616
Description:  Built in Mt Clare shops and it was a 2-8-8-4. The slide lists this as Edenburg but that doesn't seem to be correct.

BO 2-8-8-4 #7618 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7618 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Quite an impressive piece of power in this Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive #7618. Built by Baldwin in 1944 (serial #70080). the loco was fit to handle long drags of coal and freight cars in the Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Vriginia and Ohio areas. Near the end of its life in 1956, it was renumbered to BO 668 in 1956 to make room for new diesels on the roster. The beautiful machine was scrapped in 1960. Unfortunately no date, location or photographer was listed for this photo.

BO 2-8-8-4 #7619 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7619 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Built by Baldwin in 1944 as Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type #7619 (serial #70081) served the B&O well as motive power for long drags of coal and freight cars. This loco met the scrapper's torch earlier than most of its sisters when it was "vacated" in September of 1956 at Bayshore, MD and then sold for scrap in November of 1956. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo. If you recognize the roundhouse and turntable, please leave a comment so I can update the page.

BO 2-8-8-4 #7621 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7621 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Although not the B&O's first choice of loco to order, the War Production Board restricted diesel orders so these 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone steam locomotives were the only power that B&O could order. Built by Baldwin in June of 1945 as BO #7621 (serial #71503), it proved to be up to the task of handling long drags of coal and freight cars especially in the Cumberland area. The loco was eventually pushed to the side of the roster starting with its renumbered in 1956 to BO #671 and then dropped from the roster completely in 1960. No date, location or photographer was listed for this great image unfortunately.

BO 2-8-8-4 #7623 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7623 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Built by Baldwin near the end of their steam loco production was this B&O 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locootive #7623 (serial #71505) in June of 1945. It was powerful and reliable even though the B&O had wanted diesels instead but were fored by the War Production Board to take these locos. It was powerful enought to pull long drags of coal and freight cars and yet nimble enough to fill in a few times for passenger service. The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 673 to make room for new diesels. The final straw was being dropped from the roster in 1960 and scrapped. No date, location or photographer was listed for this nice view of a once powerful and massive locomotive.

BO 2-8-8-4 #7626 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-8-8-4 #7626 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Abosulutely beautiful and iconic shot of the massive B&O 2-8-8-4 #7626 in action heading up a long drag of freight cars. Built by Baldwin in July of 1945 (serial #71508), the loco served the B&O well. However technology was against this massive loco - diesels soon took over the roster and slowly pushed these massive brutes over the edge. The loco was first renumbered in February of 1957 BO 676 to make room on the roster for new diesels. Then the scrapper's torch ended its career in 1960 after barely 15 years of service. Specs - EM-1 class, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. Unfortunately, no date, location or photographer was listed for this photo.

Baltimore & Ohio RR 2-8-8-4 #7629
Title:  Baltimore & Ohio RR 2-8-8-4 #7629
Description:  This massive 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1944. One massive locomotive!
