Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B on Train #21, the Morning Zephyr (aka Twin Cities Zephyr) arriving at Aurora, Illinois on March 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4440), became BN 9929 (3/2/1970) and was sold for scrap January 25, 1971. The fireman is in the cab door to pick up orders as the train enters the Aurora Depot. The careful observer will note that the observation car is coupled to the baggage car, instead of its usual place at the end of the train. As I understand it, this was to save switching charges at St. Paul. Rather than pay St. Paul Union Depot to wye the train, the train was left in the depot, the engines and baggage car would cut off the train and run off to be serviced, returning to the train after turning themselves, and would couple back to other end of the train. The observation car would then be on the rear of the train for the return trip to Chicago. |
