Number 1843 was built in December 1959 as Southern SD24 2524 (c/n 25620) on EMD Order 5606, renumbered in 1972 by the Southern to 6343. In January 1978 it was sold to PNC, becoming PNC 6343 and put into PNC's lease fleet. During 1979 it was sent to Morrison Knudsen and rebuilt into a SD18m. Included in the rebuilding was the removal of the turbocharger and dynamic brakes, with the resistor grid plated over. It returned to PNC as 1843 and was leased for about a year to the BN. During late-1980 it was leased to the C&NW, and in March 1982 it was purchased from PNC by the C&NW, becoming C&NW 6640. |
