CB&Q E8 9974
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 12, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There is a distortion in the paint on the nose running vertically to the right of the headlight and over to the grab iron. At first I thought it was a dent, then I figured out it was the shadow of a pole behind me. Also note the replacement MU plug cover to the left of the upper headlight. The CB&Q was pretty good about keeping up appearances, and this locomotive would likely visit the paint shop soon so the missing stripes can be applied.

Iver Tranes General I,m curious. Did CB&Q or EMD design the paint scheme for Burlington's E units? 2/16/2015 10:12:28 AM
Chuck Zeiler General As to who actually designed the scheme, I do not know. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #10, The E's, edited by Hol Wagner, regarding the nose paint on the E5's, which at delivery, was black paint, changed to red around 1958: The striping was styled to make the units resemble the earlier shovelnoses; stripes flanking the (upper) headlight casing imitated the air intake grills of the shovelnoses, while the three broad stripes around the nose (lower headlight) imitated the cab windows of the shovelnoses. Another note, half way through the E7 orders, EMD changed from a small numberboard to a large numberboard, and a fourth strip was added above the lower headlight. 2/16/2015 10:39:40 AM
