Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1948. Shown here is a Pennsylvania Railroad L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" steam locomotive helping two GM-EMD E-7 Diesels pull the "Southwestern Mail" around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. The famous whitewashed stone "horseshoe" is visible at the left. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-9). |
