Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1948. Shown here is an unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" helping a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" pull the eleven-car "Metropolitan" around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Note the lone "helper" locomotive exits the Curve on its way back to Altoona for further assignments. Partially visible at the right are two of Altoona's reservoirs. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-5). |
